The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old suspected cult leader, Abiodun John, with firearms in his possession.

The arrest took place during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Akute/Olambe road in Ifo Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest in a statement released in Abeokuta, the state capital.

She said, “On January 9, 2025, at about 3:30 PM, Ajuwon police officers were conducting a lawful patrol and performing stop-and-search duties along the Akute/Olambe road. They received a tip-off from the public about two men suspected to be inside a Venza car with dealer number URSMOT AUTOS 4657DLA.”

The officers intercepted and stopped the vehicle in front of the Osaro Mobile Filling Station.

“One suspect, identified as Abiodun John, a 25-year-old male from the Olori area of Akute, was arrested, while another suspect managed to escape,” she added.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two locally-made pistols and three live cartridges.

Odutola explained, “Preliminary investigation has commenced, and the suspect, along with the seized items, has been taken to the station. The case will soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation after preliminary inquiries.”

Residents have commended the police for their swift action, urging them to intensify efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspect and combat cult-related crimes in the area.
