The Benue State Police Command has arrested Dr. Smart Ichor, a lecturer at Joseph Sarwan Tarka University, Makurdi, over his alleged involvement in the abduction of Mrs. Susan Anyagh, wife of the university’s ASUU Chairman.
Mrs. Anyagh was reportedly kidnapped on December 7, 2024, along Otukpo Road in Makurdi by armed men. She was later found unconscious at Ameladu in Gboko Local Government Area and rushed to a primary healthcare clinic for treatment.
The Police Command, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Superintendent Catherine Anene, explained that Dr. Ichor’s arrest followed information provided by the victim after she regained consciousness.
Superintendent Anene narrated the incident, stating, “The Police received a report of the kidnap on December 7, 2024. In response, Commissioner of Police Mr. Steve Yabanet ordered patrol teams to prioritize her rescue and apprehend the suspects.
“Later that day, the victim was found unconscious along Yandev-Ugbema Road. She was taken to a clinic, where she began responding to treatment. Upon regaining consciousness, she recounted her ordeal.
“She stated that while driving from NNPC Mega Fuel Station in Kanshio, where she had gone to collect money from a customer, she stopped to help some individuals who flagged her down. These individuals entered her car, pointed a gun at her, and forced her to drive towards Wurukum.
“She noticed Dr. Ichor, her husband’s colleague, standing nearby and called out for help, but he turned away. While in the car, her abductors received a call allegedly from Dr. Ichor, instructing them to kill her.
“Fearing for her life, the kidnappers later reversed the car to a hidden location. They took ₦1.35 million she had in the car, hit her neck with a car jack, and left her unconscious.”
Dr. Ichor was subsequently arrested and is being investigated for his alleged role in the crime.
The Police Commissioner, Mr. Yabanet, urged all parties involved to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations continue. “We are committed to uncovering the truth and taking necessary actions based on the findings,” he assured.
