The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects and seized a large quantity of gunpowder hidden inside a bag of garri (a popular Nigerian food made from cassava).
A locally-made pistol and live ammunition were also recovered during the operation.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the arrest took place on Sunday when a joint security force was conducting an intelligence-driven patrol in the Aguata area. Officers stopped a suspect who was carrying three bags of garri. Upon searching the bags, they discovered gunpowder concealed beneath the food.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was delivering groceries and gunpowder to a criminal camp, where it would be used to make explosives. The suspect is now in police custody and is helping officers track down other members of the gang.
In another incident, the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SPACS) arrested a man named Nelson Wisdom, from Edo State, after raiding a criminal hideout in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. Police recovered a locally made pistol and two live rounds of ammunition during the raid.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, stated that the police and other security agencies will continue working together to combat criminal activity in the state. “All suspects shall be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation,” the police confirmed.
