The Delta State Police Command has announced the arrest of over 627 suspects and the recovery of 144 firearms, including 27 AK-47/AK-49 rifles, in the past year.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, made this disclosure at a press briefing held at the police headquarters in Asaba on Monday. He emphasized the force’s proactive approach in ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.

“We have made significant progress in maintaining peace and security,” said CP Abaniwonda. “Since January 2025, we have arrested over 627 suspects, which include 140 suspected armed robbers, 113 suspected kidnappers, 125 murder suspects, 187 suspected cultists, 62 individuals arrested for rape and defilement, and recovered 36 million naira in ransom.”

The police commissioner also listed the weapons recovered, which included 25 Beretta pistols, 56 locally made guns, and over 6,900 rounds of ammunition. These actions, according to Abaniwonda, have seriously weakened the capacity of criminal groups in the state.

The police used a mix of intelligence-driven operations, collaboration with other security agencies, and partnerships with local communities, including vigilantes and traditional leaders, to combat crime.

Abaniwonda also mentioned the significant progress in the investigation of the murder of retired Justice Ifeoma Okogwu. The justice was killed at her residence on November 24, 2025. Two suspects, Godwin Mngumi, a security guard, and Nnaji Obalum, have been arrested in connection with the crime. The police also recovered one of the victim’s mobile phones.

“The suspects confessed to tying up the late Justice, murdering her, and stealing her valuables,” said Abaniwonda. “The investigation is ongoing, and one of the stolen phones has been recovered in Asaba.”

The Delta State Police has vowed to continue its efforts to reduce crime, strengthen security, and ensure that criminal elements are held accountable.

The police command also noted the ongoing efforts in Enugu State, where six suspected cult members were arrested on Saturday. These suspects were allegedly attempting to force people into joining the Supreme Vikings Confraternity.

“The fight against cultism and other forms of violent crime will continue,” the police assured.

The Delta Police Command’s successful operations are seen as part of the broader efforts to improve security and reduce crime across the country.
