The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of ten suspects linked to an armed attack on Igoba Community in Akure North Local Government Area.
The attack, which happened late Thursday night, reportedly left several residents injured and caused panic in the area. The hoodlums were said to have robbed some people of their valuables and later moved to the palace of the traditional ruler, Oba Adinlewa John, where they allegedly attempted to assassinate him.
The monarch was said to have narrowly escaped the attack.
In a statement released on Saturday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the suspects were arrested following a swift response by police operatives after receiving a distress call.
Ayanlade said, “The Ondo State Police Command wishes to inform the public of the arrest of 10 suspects in connection with a violent attack on the Igoba Community at about 11:30 pm.
“On the said day, a group of hoodlums, armed with firearms, knives, charms, and other dangerous weapons, invaded Igoba Community with the intent to wreak havoc. In the course of their violent activities, one Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo was viciously attacked, injured, and dispossessed of her belongings.
“The assailants further advanced to the palace of His Royal Highness, Oba Adinlewa John of Igoba, where they attempted to assassinate the monarch. Fortunately, the royal father narrowly escaped the life-threatening assault.”
He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, immediately ordered a tactical operation that led to the arrest of the suspects.
“Upon receipt of the distress call, the Commissioner of Police promptly directed all necessary operational assets and manpower to the area. Led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the tactical team effected the arrest of 10 suspects,” Ayanlade said.
According to the statement, the suspects have confessed to taking part in the attack. Items recovered from them include two locally made pistols, a single-barrel gun, several live cartridges, charms, knives, and machetes.
Ayanlade said the suspects would be charged to court once investigations are completed.
