Popular Nigerian dancer and hypeman Iweh Odinaka, better known as Poco Lee, is reportedly being held on remand in the United Kingdom. The upcoming Poco Lee court hearing is generating significant public interest. He is expected to appear before a London court in September over an alleged assault offence.
According to The Punch, Benjamin Kuti, popularly known as the Oluomo of Derby and founder of the Community of Nigerians in the United Kingdom, confirmed the development on Monday. He said the entertainer is scheduled to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on September 15, 2026.
Poco Lee reportedly held on remand
Kuti said Poco Lee is currently in a UK prison. He is expected to appear before the court at 10am for a plea hearing.
“I can confirm that the reports are true. Poco Lee is currently on remand in a UK prison,” he said.
“His next court date is scheduled for the second week of September, when he is expected to have a plea hearing.”
A plea hearing ordinarily provides an accused person with an opportunity to enter a guilty or not-guilty plea to the charge. This usually happens before the court.
Kuti said he was familiar with the development because he regularly attends court proceedings. He also provides support to Nigerians involved in legal matters in the UK.
Nigerian community leader plans court appearance
The community leader said he also intends to attend Poco Lee’s September hearing. He aims to provide support during the legal proceedings.
“I will also be attending the court proceedings as part of my support for the Nigerian community in the UK, to ensure that our fellow Nigerian receives the appropriate support during this difficult period of his life,” Kuti said.
He stressed that the case should be allowed to proceed through the judicial system. People should not reach conclusions before a verdict.
“It is important that we allow the legal process to take its course. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” he said.
Kuti added that the hearing would take place at Snaresbrook Crown Court on September 15 at exactly 10am.
Reports emerged August 19
Reports about Poco Lee’s alleged detention first surfaced online on August 19. This sparked widespread discussion among fans and members of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Initial reports did not identify the alleged complainant or provide clear details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence.
At the time, publicly available reports also lacked independent confirmation from UK police or a court concerning his reported arrest.
Attention now turns to September hearing
The Punch said it contacted the court by email seeking independent confirmation of the proceedings. However, it had yet to receive a response at the time its report was filed.
Poco Lee has become one of Nigeria’s most recognisable dancers and hypemen. He rose to prominence through viral dance performances and collaborations with leading Afrobeats artistes.
The September 15 hearing is expected to provide greater clarity about the case. This includes the formal allegations before the court and Poco Lee’s response to them.
Until the matter is determined through the legal process, the allegation against the entertainer remains an allegation. It does not establish guilt.
