A full emergency was declared at India’s Chennai International Airport late Tuesday night after an IndiGo flight arriving from Kolkata reported a problem with its left engine during its approach.
The aircraft landed safely, with all 224 passengers and crew members on board reported to be unharmed.
IndiGo flight 6E-723, operating on the Kolkata-Chennai route, was approaching the airport at about 11:30 pm when the pilots noticed an issue with the left engine, including an oil leak.
The flight crew promptly alerted Air Traffic Control (ATC), prompting airport authorities to activate the full emergency response protocol.
As a precautionary measure, fire tenders, rescue vehicles and medical teams were deployed near the runway in preparation for any assistance that might be needed.
The emergency was declared at 11:29 pm, with response teams placed on standby for the aircraft’s arrival.
Despite the reported engine problem, the pilots successfully landed the aircraft on Runway 25 at 11:37 pm.
Emergency personnel examined the aircraft after it came to a stop, after which passengers were permitted to disembark.
Authorities withdrew the full emergency at 11:47 pm after confirming that all passengers and crew members were safe.
Flight operations at Chennai International Airport continued normally, with no significant disruption reported.
