Nigerian celebrities brought African beauty and pride to the world stage at the 2025 Met Gala, which held on Monday, May 5, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Among those who caught the spotlight were music stars Tems, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, popular author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and celebrity stylist Swanky Jerry. Each of them wore outfits that proudly reflected African heritage while following the year’s fashion theme.
This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” focused on showing Black creativity through well-made fashion mixed with culture. Nigerian stars stood out by blending tradition with modern style.
Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, wowed the crowd with a modern version of traditional African clothing. Her outfit, designed with a Western cut but covered in bright Aso-Ebi fabric, was a clear nod to her Nigerian roots.
Burna Boy (Damini Ogulu) wore a special outfit made by Ghanaian-British designer Ozwald Boateng. The singer described it as “specially made.” He became a trending topic after being seen laughing and chatting with UK rapper Central Cee at the event.
Ayra Starr, known for her bold fashion sense, appeared in a long, sleek dress that was both simple and eye-catching.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wore a dramatic red gown that turned heads. She was also part of the Met Gala’s 2025 host committee, joining other big names like Usher, Tyla, Ayo Edebiri, and fashion designer Dapper Dan. Her role at the event showed how much her influence has grown beyond writing.
Celebrity stylist Swanky Jerry (Jeremiah Ogbodo) also made a strong impression in a design by Deji and Kola. He shared a photo of his look on social media with the caption: “On duty for Met Gala 2025, superfine. Tailoring black style. When the theme calls for legacy, I deliver. Heritage in every stitch. Legacy in every look. Style crafted. Culture honoured.”
American-Nigerian actress Ayo Edebiri also received praise for her look, which included details inspired by Benin culture while keeping a clean, modern style. Her hair and outfit combined African tradition with global fashion.
Other Nigerians at the Met Gala include: Damson Idris, Dynasty and Soull Ogun, Ego Nwodim, Shaboozey, Nnamdi Asomugha, Kwame Onwuachi, Chioma Nnadi, and Cynthia Erivo.
The Met Gala is one of the biggest fashion events in the world, held every first Monday in May. It raises money for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Since 1995, it has been led by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who continues to shape the event’s worldwide fame.
