More than 24 hours after Nigeria’s Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung referred to the United States of America as ‘United States of Nigeria, many Nigerians are still criticizing the minister on social media platforms.
Dalung made the blunder on Thursday when he was addressing newsmen on why the U-23 football team were stranded in Atlanta, USA ahead of their participation at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.
When he was asked to explain why the team was stranded in the US, the Minster said, “Our U-23 team is suffering in the United States of Nigeria.”

Since then, Nigerians on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms have been criticizing the minister for what they tagged “unforgivable national blunder”.
A Twitter user with the handle, @iykeumeh, tweeted: “We heard the National anthem of United States of Nigeria during the Dream teams’ game against Japan last night.”
Olumide Oluyomi said, “United States of Nigeria! Is this man really a lawyer or actually a comedian?”
Hakeem AFC said, “not to worry, we are now officially an annex of USA as the new United States of Nigeria according to Dalong. USA will pay.”
Popular Nollywood actress also joined the bandwagon, tweeting, “No he didn’t say that????? ??? What is United States of Nigeria?? Mbok!!!!”.
One funny Twitter user with the handle, @General_Ibbro, tweeted, “Just like the Minister; some day, maybe our country will be renamed to United States of Nigeria. In the future, maybe in the future.”
