At least 20 players of the Super Eagles have arrived in Nigeria from their respective European clubs for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
They reportedly joined the camp after arriving at the Muritala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos on Monday night.
The team’s media officer, Babafemi Raji confirmed the news as Gernot Rohr’s Eagles begin training today, Tuesday, March 23, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, ahead of the double clash against the Benin Republic and Lesotho on Saturday and Tuesday respectively.
Everton’s Alex Iwobi, arrived alongside Rangers duo, Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun who won the Scottish Premier League title with Steven Gerrard’s side.
The players in camp are the captain, Ahmed Musa, William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi, Henry Onyekuru, Oghenekaro Etebo, Adekunle Adeleke, Chidozie Awaziem, Abdullahi Shehu, Anayo Iwuala, John Noble, Alex Iwobi, Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo, Tyrone Ebuehi, Maduka Okoye, Jamilu Collins, Francis Uzoho, Paul Onuachu and Zaidu Sanusi.
In a series of tweets posted via his official Twitter handle, the team’s media officer gave an update of activities in the camp.
“Update! 18 players now in camp. Musa, Troost-Ekong, Aina, Ajayi, Onyekuru, Etebor, Adeleke, Awaziem, Shehu, Iwuala, Noble, Iwobi, Balogun, Aribo, Ebuehi, Maduka, Collins, Onuachu.
“Update! Francis Uzoho has arrived,” he said in another tweet.
The Super Eagles confirmed the 20-man update on Tuesday morning via its verified Twitter handle.
“Update! 20 players now in camp. Musa, Troost-Ekong, Aina, Ajayi, Onyekuru, Etebor, Adeleke, Awaziem, Shehu, Iwuala, Noble, Iwobi, Balogun, Aribo, Ebuehi, Maduka, Collins, Onuachu, Uzoho,. Getting set for morning fitness session,” the tweet read.
The players are camped at the Eko Hotels and Suites and will begin training Tuesday (today) at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos ahead of the build-up to their games billed for Saturday and Tuesday next week.
The Eagles currently top Group L with eight points from four games.
Enyimba goalkeeper, John Noble, was on the initial 24-man list for both games but his teammate Anayo Iwuala and Abia Warriors’ center-back Adekunle Adeleke were handed invitations from the domestic league, following the withdrawals of some Europe-based players from the squad.
