Less than 10 days before the rerun of legislative election in Rivers State, the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Bori, Khana Local Government Area has been gutted by fire.
Eyewitnesses in the area informed newsmen that the fire incident started early morning on Friday, few days to the legislative rerun slated for July 30, 2016. INEC cancelled the election in the area on March 11 due to violence.
An official of the commission in the area said he contacted security agencies and informed them about the development.
Though, no reason has been given for the fire outbreak, a source linked the fire outbreak to sabotage.
A witness said, “the office has been substantially damaged by the fire.”
Kennedy Friday, an Ogoni activist also confirmed the fire on his Facebook post. “I have just received news this morning that the INEC office in Bori is on fire. The whole building is ablaze.”
Omoni Nnamdi, spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident on phone.
He said, “I have received the report but don’t have details yet. I will provide details when I get to the office.”
