PHOTOS: Aggrieved workers storm Lagos Assembly over minimum wage

Hundreds of workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress have embarked on a protest march to the Lagos State House of Assembly complex in Alausa.

The procession which commenced from Ikeja bus stop at 9.00am had close to a thousand angry union members carrying several banners and chanting solidarity songs.

The demonstration also caused traffic congestion forcing motorists to seek alternative routes to avoid being ensnared.

The union and its affiliates are demanding the withdrawal of a bill that would remove the National Minimum Wage from the exclusive to the concurrent legislative list.

Recall that the House of Representatives had about two weeks ago introduced the bill which according to the sponsor, Garba Mohammed (APC Kano), would allow both the federal and state governments to freely negotiate minimum wage with their workers ” in line with our federalism.”

But the organised labour opposed the bill, saying it would further undermine the working class in the country.

As of the time of filing this report, the procession continued through the busy roads of Ikeja en route the Lagos State House of Assembly in Alausa where the workers are expected to be addressed by Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
