A petrol tanker carrying fuel burst into flames on Thursday along the FIDSCO area of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ogun State.

The incident was confirmed by Seni Ogunyemi, the Commandant of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency.

According to Ogunyemi, the tanker fell into a ditch before catching fire. He noted that despite warnings, some residents were seen trying to scoop fuel from the tanker’s spillage, even as the scene remained dangerous.

“A serious lone accident involving a loaded tanker with PMS fell into a ditch at the FISCO axis, Ijebu-Ode, along the Benin-Ijebu-Ode Expressway,” he said.

Ogunyemi added, “The police and fire service have been contacted. The community has been advised not to get close to the tanker, but they refuse. Efforts are ongoing to transload the product.”

However, Ogunyemi did not mention if there were any casualties. He stated, “The earlier reported laden tanker with PMS has caught fire. The fire service was there doing the needful.”
