Paolo Guerrero, Peru’s all-time leading scorer, has announced his retirement from international football at 41.
Guerrero revealed his decision during a press conference on Tuesday, citing the need for younger players to step up.
“The national team needs new people, new faces. What people are asking for are new players, so let’s give the youngsters a chance,” Guerrero said.
Guerrero made his debut for the national team in October 2004 in a match against Bolivia. Over the next two decades, he became Peru’s highest scorer with an impressive record of 40 goals in 125 appearances.
The striker, who has played for top clubs like Bayern Munich, Hamburg, and Corinthians, is currently with Alianza Lima in Peru. His last match for the national team was a 1-0 loss to Argentina in November during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Guerrero represented Peru in six Copa America tournaments and played in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. His leadership and skill on the field made him a national hero, inspiring countless young players in the country.
Fans and football analysts have praised his contribution to Peruvian football, describing him as a legend of the game.
