The Director-General of the National Pension Commission, Ms. Omolola Owoloworaran, has pledged to expand the Micro Pension Scheme introduced in 2019 under the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking on Monday in Daura, shortly after paying a condolence visit to Buhari’s family, Owoloworaran said she was committed to preserving and growing the legacy of the former Nigerian leader through the scheme.

She described the initiative as a vital step toward social equity, especially for underserved populations.

She said: “We owe it to him now that he is gone, to ensure that we expand the micro pension scheme to build on the vision that he helped to implement in 2019, ensuring that there is fairness in the pension system.”

Owoloworaran praised the late President for his integrity and dedication to public service, noting that his death is a national tragedy. According to her, Buhari made significant contributions to the pension industry, and his leadership was marked by a sincere concern for the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.

“I always say he is one of the most honest politicians this country has ever had. He was a great leader. In PenCom in particular, he did a lot to support the pension industry,” she said.

She added, “During his time, he cared a lot about the millions of Nigerians who were struggling, particularly the poor.”

Offering prayers for the late president, Owoloworaran asked for divine mercy and eternal peace for his soul.
