The Peoples Democratic Party has demanded justice over the killing of seven civilians at a mining site in Wat, Kuru District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The party condemned the attack, which occurred on January 21, 2026, describing it as a painful and unacceptable loss of innocent lives.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Plateau State Publicity Secretary of the party, Choji Dalyop, the PDP accused the government of failing to protect citizens and curb rising insecurity in the state.

The party said the continued attacks were eroding public trust and posing a serious threat to peace and democracy in Plateau.

“The PDP condemns in the strongest terms the gruesome killing of innocent civilians at a mining site in Wat community. This is another tragic reminder of the worsening insecurity in Plateau State and the egregious failure of government to safeguard lives,” the statement said.

The PDP referred to a 2025 fact-finding report set up by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, which revealed that about 420 communities had suffered attacks, thousands of residents displaced, and nearly 12,000 people killed over the years.

According to the report cited by the party, many of the attackers allegedly came from neighbouring states, with the violence described as organised and deliberate.

The party called on authorities to take concrete steps, demanding a full probe and justice for the victims.

“We demand a transparent and impartial investigation into the killings, with findings made public, swift prosecution of the perpetrators to ensure accountability, and a clear, actionable government plan to address insecurity and prevent further loss of life,” the PDP stated.

Dalyop stressed that mere words were no longer enough, insisting that residents deserved real action from those in power.

“The art of rhetoric and empty condemnations alone will not suffice herein, for the people demand action, justice, and a government that prioritises human life over and above political power,” he said.

He added that the party stood with the bereaved families and affected communities, while also calling for wider attention to the security situation in the state.

“The Peoples Democratic Party stands in solidarity with the families of the victims and the affected communities, and urges both the national and international communities to continue to monitor the resurgence of insecurity and human rights situation in Plateau State, for speedy and decisive action,” Dalyop said.
