The Peoples Democratic Party in Cross River State has given its officials a 48-hour ultimatum to either publicly denounce their inclusion in a list published by the African Democratic Congress or resign from the party.
In a statement issued Thursday evening by the PDP’s State Publicity Secretary, Prince Mike Ojisi, the party reacted to the publication of names by the ADC following its 28th State Working Committee meeting in Calabar.
The list reportedly identified some PDP members as Local Government and Area Coordinators for the ADC.
While affirming the constitutional right of individuals to freedom of association, the PDP emphasized that such rights must be exercised within the bounds of the law and party regulations.
“Nevertheless, the State Working Committee firmly resolved that any individual members wishing to join other political parties should first resign their membership from the party, as the Electoral Act does not support dual membership of political parties.
“Therefore, the SWC has requested those whose names are so published to be honourable enough to do the needful by either denouncing such publication or resigning their positions in the party within 48 hours; otherwise, the party will invoke the relevant disciplinary provisions of its constitution against them.”
The party reiterated that it has no affiliation with the ADC or any coalition involving the party. It urged members to remain loyal and avoid actions that could be interpreted as defection or anti-party conduct.
Reassuring its members and supporters, the PDP reaffirmed its commitment to upholding its founding values and working toward good governance in Cross River State.
The statement concluded with a critique of the current administration, stating that the state is “presently under arrest in the rudderless administration of the APC in the state.”
