The People’s Democratic Party has expressed strong condemnation over the withdrawal of some of its Chairmanship candidates from the upcoming Abuja Local Council elections, describing the move as “anti-democratic” and carried out without the party’s consent.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the National Working Committee said the withdrawals reflect a “voodoo democracy” promoted by leaders aligned with the ruling party, accusing them of attempting to manipulate election outcomes for political convenience.
“This action is anti-democratic in every sense and is hereby totally condemned by the Party. Democracy thrives on healthy electoral contests, not forced or induced melodramatic consensus,” the statement read.
The PDP further accused these actors of trying to secure a smooth path for the President in future elections, despite what the party described as the “abysmal performance” of the administration.
The statement emphasized that such acts were part of the reason the individuals involved were excommunicated from the PDP, as the party seeks to rebuild a strong opposition in preparation for the 2027 elections.
The party also called on voters to safeguard their votes, urging that Presiding Officers transmit election results immediately after announcement at polling units.
Comrade Ememobong concluded the statement by urging citizens to be vigilant and “ensure that their votes count.”
