Oyo school urges repair of flooded roads ahead of resumption

As schools in Oyo State prepare to reopen for a new session on Tuesday, the Alumni Association of Jericho High School, Eleyele, Ibadan, has called on the state government to fix the access road to the school, which has become impassable due to flooding.

In a statement, the association’s Public Relations Officer, Obarotimi Maitanmi, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the road’s condition has worsened after recent heavy rains.

He said, “The road has been severely impacted by flooding, which has rendered it almost impassable. As a result, both students and teachers may face significant challenges when school resumes on Tuesday, September 17th, 2024.”

According to Maitanmi, the association is concerned about the safety of students and staff as the new school session begins. He added, “Flooding threatens not only the safety of those accessing the school, but also the smooth functioning of day-to-day operations.”

He further explained that if the government does not intervene soon, the situation could become more dangerous with ongoing rains. “Heavy rains in recent weeks have further deteriorated the road, leaving parts submerged under water. With the rainy season still ongoing, the situation could become more dangerous if left unaddressed,” Maitanmi said.

The association is urging Governor Seyi Makinde and relevant authorities to quickly repair the road to ensure the safety of all who need to access the school. In the meantime, the school management is working with stakeholders to create a temporary foot passage until a permanent solution can be provided by the state.

“Also, both students and staff could be forced to navigate hazardous conditions to reach the school premises, which would not only disrupt education but could also put lives at risk,” the statement added.
