In a tragic incident in the Ogbomoso Local Government Area of Oyo State, a trigger-happy officer identified as Saheed SARS allegedly opened fire, resulting in the death of a National Youth Service Corps member, Iyanda Damilola, and injury to his brother, a recent graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.
Saheed, who is attached to Oyo State Police Command, has gained notoriety among students, especially those from LAUTECH, for his aggressive approach towards individuals he suspects of involvement in illicit activities.
According to the deceased’s brother, Iyanda Oluwafemi, the tragic incident unfolded during a convocation celebration at a lounge in the early hours of Tuesday.
Saheed, purportedly attempting to disperse a gathering outside the venue, fired shots recklessly, with one fatally striking Damilola.
Recounting the distressing experience, Oluwafemi stated, “Yesterday was our convocation, and we were at a lounge for a convocation party around 2 am when we heard that some people were fighting outside. When we discovered that the place was getting rowdy, we stepped out only to see policemen dispersing the crowd and shooting directly at the people.”
While Oluwafemi sustained injuries from the gunfire, Damilola tragically succumbed to his head injury at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital.
Expressing his anguish and resolve to pursue justice for his brother, Oluwafemi asserted, “As I speak with you, I am at the clinic for my treatment. The wounds are deep, and I cannot but seek justice for my innocent brother.”
Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, assured that an investigation was underway and pledged to provide updates as progress is made in the investigation.
