A soldier identified as Abubakar was beaten by a mob in the Bodija area of Oyo State after allegedly stabbing a Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps officer, Olapade Segun, to death.
According to the PUNCH, The incident occurred on Friday night at a nightclub where Abubakar and Segun were involved in a heated argument.
Eyewitnesses stated, the altercation escalated when Abubakar pulled out a dagger and stabbed Segun.
Tragically, Segun succumbed to his injuries due to severe blood loss.
Sources at the scene said Abubakar attempted to flee, but an enraged crowd quickly apprehended and beat him. “The soldier wanted to run from the scene, but the angry crowd caught him and beat him to a pulp,” a witness said. He was later rescued by fellow soldiers who arrived and dispersed the crowd.
The Nigerian Army has reportedly launched an investigation into the incident. According to sources, senior Army officers have been visiting the NSCDC’s Oyo State command as part of the inquiry. “The Army has set up a panel to investigate the matter,” another source confirmed.
Efforts to reach the Director of Nigerian Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, were unsuccessful, as his phone remained switched off, and messages sent to him had not been answered at the time of this report. Similarly, NSCDC spokesperson Babawale Afolabi did not respond to calls or messages about the incident.
