The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a landlord and his associate after a rent dispute in Ibadan turned deadly, leaving a tenant identified as Olayeni dead.

Police said the incident happened on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, in the Oriyangi area of the state capital. The tenant was allegedly attacked by the landlord’s associate during an argument over unpaid rent.

According to the police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, “During the altercation, the landlord’s associate allegedly struck the tenant, Olayeni, leading to his collapse. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.”

Osifeso confirmed that both suspects have been taken into custody, adding, “A thorough investigation is underway. The Oyo State Police Command expresses condolences to the victim’s family and assures that justice will be served.”

The case has sparked fresh outrage among residents, with many linking the tragedy to the rising cost of house rent across the country. Calls for stronger government action to regulate rent prices and prevent clashes between landlords and tenants have grown louder since the news broke.

This is not the first time Ibadan has witnessed such a violent confrontation. In 2011, police arrested a landlord in the city for allegedly killing his tenant, Jelili Akande, after a fight over a N300 electricity bill.
