Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has issued a directive requiring all commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators, commonly known as ‘Okada’, within the state to enroll in the State Residents’ Registration Scheme before December 31st.
This directive was announced following the state’s security council meeting held on Wednesday in Ibadan, the state capital. Makinde emphasized that this measure is crucial for regulating commercial motorcycle and tricycle operations across the state.
“Effective January 1st, no unregistered motorcycle or tricycle operator will be permitted to operate within the state,” Governor Makinde stated.
“This order is intended to combat the associated problems with commercial motorcycle and tricycle operations.”
“Consequently, all commercial motorcycle and tricycle riders must ensure they are registered under the state’s registration scheme,” he added.
Makinde outlined that the registration process will capture the riders’ biometrics, including their names, motorcycle registration numbers, next-of-kin details, and other pertinent information.
Furthermore, the governor mandated that all operators must wear reflective jackets at all times, emphasizing that the state government will strictly enforce this directive.
The Oyo State Residents’ Registration Scheme was initiated during Makinde’s first term in office. The commercial transport segment of the scheme is already underway across various motor parks within the state.
