The Oyo State Government has approved ₦4.5 billion to support victims of the Bodija explosion that happened on January 16, 2024.
This was announced during the Executive Council meeting held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
The Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, said in a statement that this new support is separate from the over ₦200 million already spent by the government on accommodation, feeding, medical care, and security for those affected.
“The Council also approved the recommendation of the 10-man committee to revoke the title of two properties off Adeyi Avenue, which is the scene of the explosion,” Oyelade said.
He added that the government will build a monument at the explosion site in honour of the victims.
The Council expressed concern over some public comments, accusing the government of not doing enough.
“The Council frowned at the spate of disinformation, half-truths, and mischievous lies being peddled by persons purportedly representing the residents,” Oyelade stated.
“Such insinuations are unfair and mischievous. The government will not be discouraged from doing what is right for its people.”
According to Oyelade, the committee in charge found that some families are in disputes over who should receive compensation, and this has slowed the payment process. He said the government is carefully handling those issues.
He also said property owners whose buildings were damaged but not at the exact explosion spot will be allowed to rebuild their homes, based on advice from structural engineers.
On legal matters, the government promised to continue prosecuting suspects already in court, and efforts are ongoing to arrest others still at large.
Governor Seyi Makinde, during the meeting, also spoke about rumours surrounding a cabinet reshuffle. He said the reshuffle is meant to boost performance, not to remove anyone unfairly.
“The Governor said he does not plan to drop any cabinet member except those found to be distracted,” the Commissioner said.
“He wants to end his administration in 2027 with the same energy he started with in 2019.”
The state government assured the public that it remains committed to justice, fairness, and helping all affected residents recover from the tragic incident.
