Residents of Itasa community in Iwajowa Local Government Area of Oyo State have raised concerns over the harmful effects of illegal mining in their area.
They accused miners of causing environmental damage, insecurity, and economic hardship.
Speaking at a press conference in Ibadan on Tuesday, Prof. Bayo Aborisade, who spoke on behalf of the community, warned that the situation could lead to disaster.
“Illegal mining is threatening lives, livelihoods, and the biodiversity of the region,” he said.
He accused a mining company of failing to follow the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, which requires companies to sign a Community Development Agreement before starting operations.
Prof. Aborisade alleged that some government officials have turned a blind eye to illegal mining, which has led to a rise in banditry, kidnapping, and environmental destruction.
“Communities are left at the mercy of lawless investors who move around with police escorts, bringing suffering and a bleak future of poverty and diseases,” he added.
He called on federal and state authorities to stop all mining activities until the companies meet legal requirements, including signing a CDA with host communities.
Dr. Doyin Odebowale, a former Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties to the late Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, described the situation as a case of impunity.
“I have visited Itasa, and it is time to flush these illegal miners out for the safety of the community,” he said.
The Chairman of Itasa Community Development Association, Alhaji Banji Isiaka Odedele, commended stakeholders for standing by the community in the fight against illegal mining.
Also present at the event were human rights lawyer, Barr. Femi Aborisade, and Adenike Ibitara, Chief of Staff at the Justice, Development, and Peace Commission, who promised to continue working to protect the community and ensure environmental justice.
