The Oyo State Government has invited members of the public to submit information to the Judicial Commission of Inquiry. This commission is investigating the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
According to The Punch, the government announced the call on Tuesday. The commission wants information that could help establish what happened before, during and after the attack. Additionally, they want to know how security agencies responded.
“The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the Oriire abduction is calling for public memoranda,” the government said.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, August 14, 2026.
Panel seeks information on abduction, security response
The inquiry is examining the May 15 attack on schools in communities including Esinele and Yawota. In this attack, armed men abducted 39 students and seven teachers.
The affected schools included Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, and L.A. Primary School.
The government said contributors should provide their full names, contact details and any documents that could support their submissions.
Memoranda can be submitted physically at the Conference Room, Office of the Head of Service, State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan. Alternatively, they can be sent electronically through the email address provided by the government.
The commission is also seeking information on the conduct of security agencies before the attack, during the abduction and throughout efforts to secure the victims’ release.
Victims rescued after 56 days
The students and teachers spent 56 days in captivity before they were rescued in July.
Their release was announced by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. He said security agencies secured their freedom without making concessions to the abductors.
The incident had triggered widespread concern over school safety and security in rural communities across Oyo State.
Following the rescue, Governor Seyi Makinde called for an independent investigation into the attack and the response that followed.
The government said the judicial inquiry was part of efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the abduction. Additionally, the inquiry aims to strengthen security measures against similar incidents.
“The Oyo State Government remains committed to the safety of every community,” the statement added.
