The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Jubril Emilagba, has ordered a ban on sleeping inside Oyingbo Market, citing growing security concerns.

Emilagba announced the directive on Friday during a security meeting with market leaders and traders in Lagos.

He said the decision was taken to protect lives and property and to prevent criminals from taking advantage of the market environment at night.

“No one is permitted to sleep in the market. This directive is strictly for security reasons, to prevent criminal elements from taking advantage of the environment,” the chairman said.

According to him, markets are meant for lawful trading activities and should not be used as places of residence.

He explained that the ban forms part of his administration’s wider effort to improve safety across all markets within the local government area.

Emilagba added that the council would work closely with security agencies and market executives to ensure full enforcement of the directive.

“We are committed to ensuring that Oyingbo Market remains safe for traders, customers and residents. Security agencies will be involved in enforcing this directive,” he said.

The chairman also stressed the importance of regular engagement with market stakeholders, noting that cooperation with traders was key to maintaining order and security.

During the meeting, Emilagba advised traders to register for the National Identification Number and the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency, describing both as important tools for proper identity management and security planning.

He also encouraged eligible traders to take part in the ongoing All Progressives Congress e-registration exercise to promote grassroots political participation.

Responding on behalf of the traders, the Women Leader of Oyingbo Market, Mrs Basira Balogun, welcomed the decision, saying it would help improve safety.

“We understand the security implications and we will work with the local government to ensure compliance among traders,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the local government plans to intensify monitoring in the market to ensure the directive is obeyed.
