Nine workers have died and 11 others injured after a lorry carrying mangoes overturned in the Annamayya district of southern India’s Andhra Pradesh state.

Police said the accident happened on Sunday night in the Pullampeta area, about 387 kilometres from the state capital, Amaravati.

A police officer explained, “The accident took place when the lorry lost control and turned turtle. The lorry was carrying an overload of mangoes, about 40 tonnes, with 20 workers seated on top of the load.”

When the lorry overturned, the mango crates reportedly fell on the workers, crushing some to death and injuring others.

Locals and emergency workers rushed to the scene to rescue survivors and move the injured to the hospital.

Police said investigations are still ongoing but suspect overloading caused the accident. However, the driver, who survived, claimed he lost control while trying to avoid a car coming from the opposite direction.

Deadly road crashes are common in India, mostly caused by overloading, bad roads, and reckless driving.
