At least 36 people, including children, have died in a stampede at a political rally in Tamil Nadu, India.
The tragic incident happened on Saturday in Karur district, where tens of thousands had gathered for an event organised by popular actor-turned-politician Vijay. Local reports said the programme started hours late, leaving the massive crowd restless. Television footage showed people collapsing as the crowd surged forward.
Confirming the deaths, politician Senthil Balaji said more than 50 others were injured. Tamil Nadu’s Health Minister, Ma Subramanian, told local media that among the dead were 16 women, nine men, and six children.
Chief Minister MK Stalin described the tragedy as “heartbreaking.” He said survivors who fainted in the crowd were rushed to hospitals, with doctors from nearby districts called in to help. The state government announced one million rupees ($11,300) compensation for each family of the deceased and ordered an inquiry.
“My brother’s two children were there. Two boys. The elder one passed away, the younger one is missing. My sister-in-law is in ICU. What should I do?” a grieving man told ANI news agency outside a hospital.
Vijay reacted with deep sorrow, saying his heart was “broken” and he was in “unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow.” He offered condolences to the victims’ families and wished those injured a quick recovery.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called the incident “deeply saddening” in a post on X.
