The French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, has disclosed that more than 1,150 Nigerians have pursued higher education in France, with many making notable contributions in fields such as innovation, sustainability, and the creative industries.
According to The PUNCH, Fonbaustier made the remark during a cocktail event in Abuja on Thursday to mark France Alumni Day, an annual celebration of international graduates from French institutions.
The event spotlighted the achievements of Nigerian alumni who have excelled in diverse sectors including fashion, art, environmental advocacy, and French gastronomy.
“You’ll be surprised to know that approximately 1,150 Nigerians have studied in France over the years,” Fonbaustier said.
“Some have returned to contribute meaningfully to national development, while others have remained in France, working under professional contracts. What is clear is that they’re all making a difference.”
The ambassador commended the entrepreneurial spirit of young Nigerians who, after their studies in France, returned home to create ventures addressing both social and environmental challenges.
“In a nutshell, we have young Nigerians who studied in France and came back to launch businesses, contribute to national development, and accomplish their destiny,” he noted.
A highlight of the evening was the recognition of 17 Nigerian alumni behind an innovative plastic recycling initiative. The project, which transforms plastic waste into usable products, was presented as a model of sustainability and international knowledge-sharing.
“These alumni are part of a larger effort to combat plastic waste. Their project shows how innovation and knowledge transfer can thrive across borders,” the ambassador stated. “It reflects the diversity and inclusiveness of the France Alumni network and the rich cultural tapestry of Nigeria.”
Fonbaustier also observed that a significant number of alumni are based in Lagos and the southern regions of Nigeria, citing greater access to employment and the concentration of businesses as key factors.
