Ousted Plateau lawmakers set to return to assembly

A political crisis is unfolding in Plateau State as 16 members of the State House of Assembly, recently ousted by the Court of Appeal, are steadfast in their determination to return to the legislative body despite the court’s rulings that nullified their elections.

According to Daily Trust, the Appeal Court’s decision was grounded in the assertion that their political party lacked the necessary structure to sponsor candidates in the last general elections.

During a press briefing held on Monday in Jos, the state capital, the dismissed lawmakers, led by Ishaku Maren, articulated their position.

They argued that the Supreme Court’s judgment, which validated the election of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, simultaneously qualified them to retain their positions in the Assembly.

Expressing their defiance, the lawmakers announced their intention to resume legislative duties on Tuesday, coinciding with the House’s scheduled reconvening after a two-month recess.

Governor Mutfwang, addressing the situation, had visited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday.

In his discussions with State House correspondents, he disclosed that both political and legal avenues were being explored to address the perceived injustice meted out to the PDP lawmakers who were removed from office by the Court of Appeal.

The governor emphasized a commitment to seeking solutions that would rectify the situation and restore the ousted members to their rightful positions in the State House of Assembly.
