Ousted Gabon president released from house arrest
Gabon’s former president Ali Bongo, who was ousted in a coup last month, is free to leave the country and travel abroad, the leader of the coup said on Wednesday.
General Brice Oligui Nguema, who was sworn in as Gabon’s new head of state, said in a statement read on state television that Bongo has “freedom of movement” and “can travel abroad if he wishes.”
Bongo, who had been in power for 14 years, was placed under house arrest after the August 30 coup, which was carried out without bloodshed. The coup leaders accused Bongo of winning his re-election in a fraudulent vote.
Bongo suffered a serious stroke in October 2018, which left him with physical impairments, including difficulty moving his right leg and arm.
The coup leaders have said that they will hold new elections within two years
