The Elegbedi of Egbedi in Osun State, Oba Muideen Azeez, along with four others, has been remanded at the Ife Correctional Centre after failing to meet bail conditions in a case involving alleged arson and destruction of property worth N200 million.
The monarch, along with Akibu Abioye, Yisa Akolapi, Rasidi Ayandiran, and Sarafadeen Abioye, appeared before Justice Kudirat Akano at the Osun State High Court in Ede. They faced 29 charges, including arson, destruction of farmland, illegal possession of firearms, and robbery.
Despite being granted bail set at N5 million each, with the requirement of two sureties who must be level 16 civil servants and property owners in the state, the accused were unable to meet the conditions. As a result, they were taken into custody at around 2:10 pm by correctional officers.
During Thursday’s hearing, one of the witnesses, Mustafa Waheed, testified that the monarch attacked him with a cutlass and destroyed his farmland in Iloba, even in the presence of security operatives.
Mr. Abiodun Badiora represented the prosecution from the Osun State Ministry of Justice, while Mr. Bukola Atobatele defended the accused.
The case has been adjourned until October 16, 2024, for the continuation of the hearing.
