Osun community protests alleged college campus relocation
Esa-Oke community in Osun State erupted in pockets of protests on Monday, as enraged youths and community leaders voiced their vehement opposition to the purported approval of a new satellite campus for the state College of Technology in Ibokun, a neighboring town.
Gathering in scores at various locations within Esa-Oke, the demonstrators, comprising youths, market women, NURTW members, and even masquerades, brandished placards emblazoned with messages condemning the proposed relocation.
With slogans like “We condemn in totality the approval of a new satellite campus in Ibokun” and “We resist the move with the last drop of our blood,” the protesters voiced their unequivocal dissent.
In a letter addressed to Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke and dated February 13th, the Oba-In-Council, Owa-Omiran Palace, Esa-Oke, expressed deep concerns over the alleged role of the institution’s governing council chairman in the unfolding crisis.
Signed by prominent community figures including Oba Adeyemi A. Adediran and High Chief Abimbola K. Olamiji, the letter demanded the removal of Prince Diran Odeyemi and stressed the imperative of Esa-Oke community representation on the Governing Council to safeguard their interests.
Governor Ademola Adeleke swiftly responded to the allegations, refuting claims of any such approval for the relocation of the college’s satellite campus to Ibokun. Through his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the Governor clarified that no such decision had been made, categorically labeling the reports as baseless and the handiwork of mischief-makers.
“I am directed to confirm to the good people of Esa Oke that no such approval was given by Mr. Governor. The status quo ante remains,” stated Mallam Olawale Rasheed.
In the wake of the protests, Governor Adeleke urged the youth and elders of Esa Oke to maintain peace and refrain from actions that could incite violence. His call for calm aimed to reassure residents and uphold the tranquility of the academic community amidst rising tensions.
