The Osun State House of Assembly has granted approval for the extension of the tenure of caretaker committees overseeing local government councils and Local Council Development Authorities within the state.
According to a statement issued by Olamide Tiamiyu, spokesperson to Adewale Egbedun, the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, the extension was based on a letter forwarded to the House by the State Governor, Sen. Dr. Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke. The letter was presented during the Plenary session on Friday by Speaker Adewale Egbedun.
The motion for the extension was initiated by Hon. Babajide Kofoworola Adewunmi, representing Ede North State Constituency, and seconded by Chief Whip Hon. Adewale Akerele from Ilesa West State Constituency. Hon. Babajide Adewunmi underscored the constitutional authority vested in the State Assembly to approve such extensions, citing the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended.
Following extensive deliberations and evaluations of their performances, the Assembly members endorsed the motion, thereby extending the tenure of the Caretaker Committees until August 2024.
In his remarks, Speaker Adewale Egbedun commended the caretaker committees and urged them to continue delivering tangible benefits of democracy to grassroots communities.
“The members, after much deliberation and assessment of their performances, adopted the motion and approved the request thereby extending the tenure of the Caretaker Committees to August 2024” he said.
