Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, has been ruled out of Nigeria’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa, scheduled for Tuesday in Bloemfontein.
The Napoli forward sustained an injury during Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo.
Osimhen was forced off midway through the first half following a collision with Rwandan defender, Claude Niyomugabo.
An update from the team’s camp on Sunday confirmed his unavailability for the upcoming clash after undergoing medical checks.
“Team doctor confirmed Victor Osimhen’s injury is a bruise on his chin. He woke up this morning with discomfort and will not be travelling with the squad to South Africa for Tuesday’s game,” Super Eagles Media Officer, Promise Efoghe, explained in a WhatsApp message to our correspondent.
Although Osimhen is expected to return to Galatasaray for further evaluation and treatment, his absence poses a significant concern for Nigeria’s attacking options.
He was replaced by Cyriel Dessers during the match against Rwanda. However, the Belgium-born striker struggled to make an impact. It was second-half substitute Tolu Arokodare who eventually sealed the win with a 51st-minute goal, keeping Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive.
With Osimhen unavailable, head coach Eric Chelle is likely to rely on Arokodare to lead the line against Bafana Bafana.
The Super Eagles’ qualification campaign remains precarious. Saturday’s result marked only their second win in seven matches. Nigeria has recorded four draws and one loss, placing them third in their group with 10 points.
South Africa tops the group with 16 points, followed by Benin Republic with 11. Only the group winners will qualify automatically for the tournament set to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, alongside winners from eight other African qualifying groups.
