The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission has presented Certificates of Return to the newly elected chairmen of the 30 local government councils in the state.
On Saturday, OSIEC announced that the Peoples Democratic Party won all the chairmanship and councillorship positions in the local government elections.
In a statement on Sunday, OSIEC’s Information Officer, Sadiat Isiaka, said the commission’s chairman, Barrister Hashim Abioye, congratulated the winners and urged them to serve the people diligently.
He encouraged the new chairmen to be good representatives of democracy, adding that their success comes with the responsibility of delivering quality governance at the grassroots.
Meanwhile, the Osun PDP has praised the people of the state for participating in the elections.
The party’s chairman, Hon. Sunday Bisi, described the voters as the “heroes of democracy,” commending their courage despite alleged attempts to disrupt the process.
Bisi said, “Before and on Saturday, the will of our people for democracy was greatly tested by anti-democratic elements. Everything was put into stopping the election, albeit, illegally.
“It was a challenging moment reminiscent of the dark era of the military, and to our greatest delight, the Osun people rose in asserting their rights to vote and be voted for. We are very proud of the people and honour them as the heroes of democracy.”
He also condemned the violence that happened before the election, accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC) of trying to stop the polls.
Bisi alleged that APC thugs attacked voters, leading to the death of a barber, Ajilore Ifeoluwa, in Ilesa East, and injuries to others.
“We are greatly alarmed that the APC thugs wrought violence on innocent voters, leading to the death of a barber in Ilesa East, and injuries to many others across the state.
“Ajilore Ifeoluwa was just an innocent voter yet, he was shot to death by Ademoroti Adeboye, also known as Germani, a known associate of former Osun State House of Assembly Speaker, Timothy Owoeye, just because he wanted to exercise his franchise.
“What is most alarming was that this incident happened right in the presence of policemen yet no effort was made to arrest the assailant who walked away freely,” he said.
The PDP called on security agencies to arrest those responsible and ensure justice for the victims.
