The White House on Tuesday expressed that a ceasefire in Gaza would primarily benefit Hamas, as Israel continues its aerial campaign against the militant group responsible for an unprecedented attack earlier this month, as reported by AFP.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby emphasized, “A ceasefire at this moment predominantly favors Hamas,” during a briefing with journalists.

The conflict has resulted in a substantial loss of life on both sides, with Hamas militants crossing into Israel on October 7, carrying out civilian executions and taking hostages, while Israel responded with a sustained bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

On Monday, the United States reiterated its opposition to calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, asserting that it would provide Hamas with an opportunity to regroup and plan further attacks against Israel.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated, “Any ceasefire would provide the opportunity for rest, rearmament, and preparation for continued terrorist attacks against Israel.” Miller emphasized the gravity of the situation for Israel and any nation facing a severe terrorist threat on its border.

In addition, Miller highlighted the intensive efforts of US special envoy David Satterfield on the ground to facilitate the passage of humanitarian aid through the Rafah crossing and ensure the safe departure of US citizens and other foreign nationals.

The conflict in Gaza, under Israeli bombardment and blockade since October 7, was triggered when Hamas initiated Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, an unexpected, multi-pronged attack involving rocket launches and infiltrations into Israel by land, sea, and air.

Hamas cited this incursion as retaliation for the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque and escalating violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians.

The conflict has led to a significant loss of life, with casualties numbering nearly 6,500 individuals, including at least 5,087 Palestinians and over 1,400 Israelis.
