Nigeria is poised to introduce an automated passport application process, allowing citizens to apply and complete their passport applications online without human contact.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the commencement of the automated system on January 8, 2024, during an inspection of Nigeria Immigration Service facilities in Abuja.

“We are good to go live. We are starting the training and on January 8, the solution will be live and direct for Nigerians to have a good feel, a sweet experience based on the Renewed Hope of Mr. President,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

The initiative aims to minimize human contact in the passport acquisition process, providing a convenient and secure experience for applicants.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the government’s commitment to ending the submission of fake documents for passport applications.

“We have been able to reduce human contact in passport acquisition to the minimum,” the minister added. He highlighted the significance of the new system in enhancing the country’s security architecture and ensuring the comfort and convenience of Nigerian citizens.

To further enhance document verification, the Nigeria Immigration Service has deployed document verification officers across all local government areas in the country.

This move aims to scrutinize passport applications thoroughly and prevent the submission of fraudulent documents.

The automation of the passport application process aligns with the government’s efforts to leverage technology for efficient service delivery and security enhancement.
