Gunmen attacked members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group from Umuchu along the Amesi/Uga Road on Sunday, injuring one person and destroying a van.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday. Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, explained that the injured victim was rushed to a hospital where he is receiving treatment.

“The Joint Security Forces quickly rushed the victim to the hospital where he is currently responding to treatment and activated intelligent-information-led patrols in the area aimed to deny the criminals the space they enjoy to cause havoc and possibly arrest,” Ikenga said.

He added that during the attack, bullets struck the fuel tank of the vigilantes’ Toyota Frontier van, causing it to catch fire and burn completely.

In a separate incident, police operatives in Okpoko, Anambra State, prevented hoodlums from looting during a fire outbreak at Chukwunonso Street along Obodoukwu Road.

Ikenga explained, “Police operatives cordoned off the scene of the incident to prevent hoodlums from taking undue advantage of the situation to loot properties and goods of individuals.”
