One person has been killed and three others injured after an Iranian commercial vessel was reportedly struck in the Gulf near Qeshm Island in southern Iran, according to a local official.
Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, citing Qeshm Governor Amir Teymouri, said the incident occurred early Sunday and described it as an attack carried out by the “US terrorist enemy.”
Teymouri said the vessel was hit at about 5 a.m. local time (0130 GMT) in waters around Hengam Island and the Shib Deraz coastline of Qeshm Island.
Authorities had not immediately released further information about the identity of the vessel, the nature of the incident or what may have caused the reported strike.
The reported incident came as tensions remained high around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a major global route for energy shipments.
In a separate statement on Sunday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said a vessel travelling through the Strait of Hormuz had been hit by an unidentified munition.
UKMTO said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in that incident, but provided no further details about the vessel or the circumstances surrounding the strike.
