A group of armed bandits, self-identifying as the ‘Ijaw Freedom Fighters’, launched an assault on Imariogha community, near Okomu Oil Palm Plantation in Edo State on Sunday night.
The attackers, formerly known as AT&P, targeted the community located in Ovia South West Local Government Area, resulting in a trail of devastation.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria, the armed bandits wreaked havoc by setting ablaze over eight vehicles and causing damage to numerous houses. Tragically, one person lost their life during the onslaught.
Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Edo, Mr. Funsho Adegboye, expressed awareness of the attack and assured that steps were being taken to address the situation. He stated, “We are aware of the incident and have visited the community. We are already holding talks in partnership with sister security organizations and Okomu oil palm company to arrest the situation.”
Eyewitnesses revealed that the invaders infiltrated the community from the Riverside around midnight, unleashing chaos by firing shots indiscriminately into the air.
Their destructive spree included setting fire to private vehicles and causing significant damage to residential properties.
A community leader, Mr. Rex Akpokiniovo, shared grim details of the attack, disclosing that one person lost their life in the violence.
Additionally, Pa Gabriel Okorugbe, a revered chief within the community, sustained injuries during the assault and has been hospitalized for treatment.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the Imariogha community, leaving residents in a state of fear and uncertainty.
Authorities are now working tirelessly to restore peace and security to the area, with concerted efforts underway to apprehend those responsible for the heinous act.
