One dies as storm hits UK

Storm Babet which caused heavy rains and flooding in the UK has resulted in the death of a 57-year-old woman who was swept into a river on Thursday in Angus, Scotland.

The incident occurred amidst heavy rain and winds with a speed of 80 miles per hour battering the region.

According to Daily Mail, the woman’s body was discovered in the Water of Lee at Glen Esk, Angus. Local police were alerted to the incident at 1:45 p.m., and the body was recovered by 4 p.m. Authorities stated that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Scotland’s deputy First Minister, Shona Robison, has expressed concern that the worst impacts of the storm are yet to come.

The severe weather has led to the evacuation of approximately 360 homes in Brechin, Angus, with 10,000 homes across the UK left without power.

The UK is bracing for one of its wettest days ever, with forecasts indicating between 200 and 220mm of rain in some parts of eastern Scotland.

Some residents have been advised to leave their homes, and these rainfall levels are close to the country’s record of 238mm in a single day, set in 1974.

As a result of the heavy rainfall, streets in Brechin, Angus, had to be closed to prevent flooding. Rivers and surface water flooding are expected to be extensive.
