Chaos erupted in the Jaen Makera quarters of Kano metropolis as suspected hoodlums launched an attack, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to two policemen.

The outgoing Commissioner of Police, AIG Usaini Gumel, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday.

Gumel identified the deceased as Muktar Garba, also known as Babalia. “The suspects killed Muktar Garba during the incident,” he said. “Garba died while receiving treatment at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, and his corpse has been released to his relatives for burial.”

According to Gumel, the hoodlums, armed with dangerous weapons, defied the police presence in the area and began attacking innocent people. Despite the initial police deployment, the situation escalated until additional reinforcement from the police tactical team and nearby divisions arrived, causing the attackers to flee.

“Efforts are being intensified to identify and arrest the perpetrators,” the commissioner stated. He also mentioned that other groups of hoodlums had engaged in street fighting on Wednesday at Yan Dillalai and Jaen Makera but were dispersed by the police.

Two policemen, SC Wasilu Umar and PC Abdulmalik Yusif, were injured during the clashes. “The injured policemen were treated and discharged from the hospital,” Gumel said. He added that a suspect, Umar Shuaibu, was arrested for attacking Yusif, and a vehicle attached to Filin Hockey was destroyed.

Gumel assured the public that normalcy had returned to the area and that police personnel were actively monitoring the situation. “The command strives to address the underlying causes of violence and promote lasting peace and well-being for all individuals affected,” he said.

The police commissioner emphasized the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of the residents in Kano.
