A man has been killed and two others critically injured following a stabbing incident on Tuesday along a busy shopping strip in western Sydney, in Australia’s New South Wales, according to media reports.
The attack occurred in the suburb of Merrylands on Merrylands Road, a major commercial area. Emergency services responded after reports that a man had stabbed several people before fleeing the scene on foot, ABC News reported.
A man believed to be in his 30s or 40s was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by paramedics to save him.
Authorities said a 22-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman were transported to hospital in critical condition.
Police confirmed that two of the stabbings occurred inside a business premises, while another took place on the footpath outside.
Officers later arrested a suspect behind a nearby house on Smythe Street. He was subsequently taken to Granville Police Station.
“The alleged offender is known to police for petty crime and a number of mental health incidents,” said NSW Police Superintendent Simon Glasser.
A crime scene has been established as investigations continue into the motive behind the attack.
