One person has died and several others have been injured after a part of a nine-storey building under construction collapsed in Asaba, Delta State, on Saturday.

According to Channels news, eyewitnesses report that the deceased was working with a cement mixer when the walls on the ninth floor fell on him, killing him instantly.

Residents expressed concerns about the construction quality and questioned whether the building had proper approvals. “The quality of work is very poor, and we wonder if the necessary permits were obtained,” one resident said.

The Delta State Government has responded by sealing the construction site and ordering an investigation into the incident. Michael Anoka, the Commissioner for Urban Renewal, visited the site to assess the situation.

Anoka stated, “The government is committed to ensuring that this matter is thoroughly investigated. We need to determine what caused the collapse and hold those responsible accountable.”

The collapse in Asaba is part of a troubling pattern of building failures in Nigeria. Earlier this week, a building collapse in Lagos killed five people. A few weeks ago, a school building collapsed in Plateau State, resulting in the deaths of many students.

Experts attribute these incidents to factors such as poor quality materials, unprofessional construction practices, and inadequate oversight.
