A head-on collision involving two Mazda commercial buses on Monday, near Ilaje on the Third Mainland Bridge, left one person dead and eight others severely injured.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its spokesman, Adebayo Taofiq.

The buses, with registration numbers LND 624 YE and EKY 804 YH, were reportedly engaged in a reckless high-speed chase from Adeniji Adele when the crash occurred. LASTMA described the accident as a “stark reminder of the catastrophic consequences of irresponsible driving practices.”

Eight passengers, who suffered severe fractures, were rescued and rushed to Gbagada General Hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical care.

Police units from Bariga and Alonge Police Stations were on the scene to provide security and ensure order during the rescue operation.

LASTMA emphasized its dedication to road safety and urged all drivers to follow speed limits and be cautious on the roads. “We implore all motorists to strictly observe speed regulations and exercise caution while driving,” the agency stated. LASTMA also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

In a related incident, a Honda CRV with registration number AKD 743 HV overturned earlier on Monday near the Unilag waterfront, also on the Third Mainland Bridge.

LASTMA said the crash was caused by excessive speeding but fortunately, no casualties were reported. The agency quickly cleared the wreckage to prevent further traffic disruptions.
