A tragic accident on Wednesday afternoon along the Okposi-Amasiri Road in Ebonyi State has left one person dead and 11 others injured.
The incident occurred when a passenger bus rammed into a stationary tipper truck at Amenu village, Okposi, in the Ohaozara Local Government Area.
According to Channels news, the 14-seater bus, carrying passengers at about 2 pm, collided with the truck, killing a female passenger on the spot. The victim, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, is believed to be a prospective member of the National Youth Service Corps.
It was gathered that 12 of the 14 passengers on the bus were NYSC prospective corps members heading to the NYSC Orientation Camp in Afikpo Local Government Area for the Batch C, Stream 11 orientation program, which began nationwide on the same day.
A passenger manifest reportedly found at the accident scene confirmed this.
Military personnel at the scene reportedly evacuated the body of the deceased, while local residents and passers-by transported the injured victims to the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences in Uburu for medical attention.
The Federal Road Safety Corps and the police in Ebonyi State have yet to provide a detailed report on the accident.
The Ebonyi State Coordinator of the NYSC, Foluke Oladeinde, confirmed the involvement of prospective corps members in the accident. Speaking with journalists, she said, “My state of mind now is not really okay, please. It affected prospective corps members, please.”
Residents of the area expressed sadness over the accident and urged authorities to ensure proper safety measures on the road to prevent such incidents.
