Just days before the governorship election in Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the All Progressives Congress candidate, promised to govern with “the fear of God” if re-elected.
Speaking to Christian leaders at St. David’s Anglican Cathedral in Akure on Monday, Aiyedatiwa highlighted his commitment to Christian values and asked for their prayers.
“I am one of you, a born-again Christian, and I understand the spiritual responsibilities that come with leadership,” Aiyedatiwa said. “The Ondo State government is anchored on the body of Christ, and as such, we cannot afford to fail. I earnestly ask that you continue to pray for us, for wisdom in governance and for the upcoming elections to be peaceful and just.”
Chairman of the state’s Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Anselm Ologunwa, praised Aiyedatiwa’s attention to issues affecting Christians. “We appreciate your dedication to our concerns and your promptness in addressing matters that affect the body of Christ,” Ologunwa noted, adding that CAN remains non-partisan. “Our duty is to promote the teachings of Jesus Christ, regardless of political affiliations.”
Ologunwa also announced a three-day prayer event starting on November 10, focused on peace for the state and the election process. “We are praying for divine guidance and the peace of Ondo State. We trust that God will intervene,” he stated.
In addition to Christian leaders, the Ondo chapter of the Trade Union Congress also endorsed Aiyedatiwa’s bid for re-election. TUC Chairman Clement Fatuase highlighted Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to workers’ welfare, pointing to the approval of a N73,000 minimum wage and the sponsorship of over 100 workers to a regional labor summit. “The governor was rated excellent, compelling the congress to support his dedication to workers’ welfare,” Fatuase explained.
In his response, Aiyedatiwa thanked the union for their support and praised the harmonious relationship between his administration and the TUC. He reiterated that timely payment of salaries is a right, not a favor, and promised continued support for civil servant training to improve service delivery.
The Ondo State governorship election is scheduled for November 16, and Aiyedatiwa has emphasized his vision for a peaceful, faith-guided administration focused on community and worker support.
