Akure is observing a full closure of markets, stalls, and shops today, Thursday, August 14, for the annual Aheregbe Festival.

The directive came from the Palace of the Deji and Paramount Ruler of Akure Kingdom, which said the closure is a long-standing tradition linked to the cultural celebration.

In a statement signed by Adeyeye Michael, Chief Press Secretary to the Deji, the palace explained that the order applies to all commercial activities for the day. Residents, traders, and shop owners were urged to comply.

“This is in line with the tradition of our people. We ask for full cooperation to ensure the festival is observed without disturbance,” the statement read.

However, pharmacies and patent medicine stores will remain open, as the palace stressed the importance of uninterrupted healthcare services.

The statement also clarified that human and vehicular movement would not be restricted, saying activities outside the affected commercial spaces would continue as usual.

Describing the Aheregbe Festival as one of the most important cultural events in Akure, the palace said it attracts participants from within and outside the city, and called on the public to respect the kingdom’s heritage.
